Future Works

As a part of our future works, we have been working on a cup holder that can securely and universally attach to the back of a wheelchair.

01- Problem

Cup Holder

  • We were presented with a client with multiple sclerosis (MS) who was wheelchair bound, having minimal mobility, especially in the arms and head. This prevented them from being able to drink liquids freely.

  • They relied on a wheelchair cup holder, which was attached to the back of their wheelchair and was able to hold various drinks or different sizes.

  • Their cup holder at the time was not universal, too simple, and was not secure.

02- Description

Cup Holder

  • This cup holder has two handles/clasps that can be attached to a leg of the wheelchair or any type of pole. There is also a lid with an opening for a straw.

  • The purpose of this is that it can be able to hold a bottle of liquid while also being attached to a wheelchair.

  • Most drink aids will be mounted in the back so that as a person drives it’s not in the way of anything. Typically if anything is mounted on the side, there is a high chance it can clip against a doorway, wall, etc.

03- How to use it

Cup Holder

  • The cup holder will be securely mounted to the back of a wheelchair through the use of its bendable clamps on the side.

  • The holder is large, allowing for any beverage to be securely placed in it.

  • Since the holder is solid, it ensures that there will be no spillage as well.

  • The opening on the top allows for a straw to come out, reaching to the clients mouth.

04-Personalizable Aspect

Cup Holder

  • On the top of the tip, there is a section where you can insert a plaque-like piece that can be personalized to the client’s liking.

  • They can add words, pictures, and symbols to the plaque using 3D printing software, printing it, and then inserting the plaque into its dedicated part of the lid.

  • This piece stays in place through the use of magnetic strips. The use of these plaques not only makes the assistive technology custom from person to person, but having dedicated, insertable places to add things is important, as the entire spoon doesn't have to be reprinted every time the client wants to personalize it.

  • This saves time, money, and resources, while also fulfilling the clients needs.

  • Like the spoon from the self-feeder, the lid part has our branding and a personalizable aspect to it.
